Volunteering FAQs

How do I go about volunteering for the event?

To volunteer for Bicycle NSW you will be required to complete an online volunteer application form, which can be found on the Volunteer opportunities page or you can contact Tony at Bicycle NSW on (02) 9704 0809 or volunteer@bicyclensw.org.au and have a form sent to you.

What is the minimum age for a volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 require parent or guardian consent to apply.

When is the cut off date to register as a volunteer?

The cut off date for registering as a volunteer is 1 week before the event,

What information and training will I receive?

Bicycle NSW will provide you with all the information and training you need to perform you role as a volunteer. If you believe that you have not received adequate training please inform Bicycle NSW on (02) 9704 0809 and we will do what we can to make you feel confident in your role as a volunteer.

Are the volunteer meetings compulsory?

All volunteers must attend at least one volunteer meeting. These meetings are set up for your benefit, they are the best chance for you to understand your role, meet your team leader, fellow volunteers and Bicycle NSW staff members, and for us to provide you with all the necessary information and training you need to successfully complete your volunteer experience. Even if you have attended previous meetings and don't feel it is necessary please consider that procedures are constantly changed and updated with each event and you may miss out on valuable information.

Is there any financial cost to me by becoming a volunteer?

It will not cost you anything to become a volunteer. Here at Bicycle NSW we value your time and efforts and welcome new and regular volunteers to come and join us for a fun day out.

Do I have to provide a passport-sized photo?

Yes. The photo is for security purposes, not only ours but yours as well. It will give you access to volunteer-only areas you need access to. It also helps to keep unwanted persons out of volunteer areas and security areas and provides identification to cyclists and staff.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes of course; we encourage it! Your friends can join as either riders of the event or volunteers, so long as they are registered. Our events are all about getting more people out of their bikes and understanding the benefits that cycling has to offer. If everyone encourages a friend to get on a bike we can make a difference.

Can I work with my friends?

Yes. If you have friends that are also volunteering let us know on your application form if you'd like to work with them and we'll do our best to arrange that for you.

Can I bring my car?

Bicycle NSW encourages volunteers to take advantage of the free public transport available to them or even better ride a bike. However if you wish to use your car getting to and from the event you are more than welcome, but parking will be restricted.

Can I bring my bike?

Yes! Bicycle NSW encourages volunteers to get out on their bike, because we believe that 'Life's better on a bike.' Bike racking is set up on some sites but it is solely your responsibility to look after your bike.

Who will I be reporting to on the day?

On event day your Team Leader will be your first point of contact. They will be responsible for assigning you to your position and delegating tasks for you to complete on the day. A contact number for them will be supplied prior to the event day.

When will I get my uniform and volunteer goodie bag?

All volunteer uniforms, supplies, equipment and goodie bags will be provided on the event day when you first arrive at your designated meeting point. Your Team Leader will be in charge of supplying you with all of these items.

How long will the event go for?

Our events are full day events starting very early in the morning and finishing late in the afternoon. Full details of the event can be found on our events web page.

How many hours am I required to work for?

Bicycle NSW tries to minimise hours for all our volunteers where possible. However there may be occasions when we ask you to help us out and put in that extra special effort. Normally on event day volunteers work between 6 to 8 hours depending on what job they are given. Breaks will be provided and the aim of the day is for you to have fun and receive a rewarding experience, while performing your duties.

When can I take a toilet break?

If you feel the need to take a break all you need to do is inform your Team Leader and make sure it is safe for you to vacate your position for the short period. Team Leaders are encouraged to look after their volunteers and provide breaks to them when needed.

What happens in an emergency?

In an emergency it is important to stay calm. Listen to the instructions from your Team Leader or emergency services and act in a safe and orderly fashion. Report any unsafe and dangerous issues to your Team Leader or appropriate emergency services. Your safety along with that of the cyclists is our main concern, so it is important that you look after yourself.
