Safe Cycling workshops

Safe_cycling_workshop_mainpage.jpgBicycle NSW, with support from the Roads and Maritime Services, are introducing a new safe cycling educational package to schools in pilot locations around NSW. Research suggests that linking in-school classroom based education with practical skills sessions is effective in communicating key safety messages, resulting in associated safe behaviour.

This new package consists of a bicycle education talk at selected schools for year 5 and 6 students, a practical skills workshop to be held on the weekend for students and their families, an activity booklet for the school, and an information booklet for the school’s year 5 and 6 students.

The talk, practical skills session and booklet focus on responsible bicycle riding, road rules, bicycle maintenance and explain the importance of wearing a helmet while riding. Giveaways and interactive quizzes will also be conducted at the talk and practical skills session to keep participants engaged and eager to participate.

Along with the material and content covered at the in-school talk, the practical skills workshop will provide students and their families with an opportunity to:

•             Enhance their awareness about bicycle riding and road safety
•             Improve their bicycle riding skills
•             Learn about the benefits of bicycle riding for transport and recreation
