Students recieving a CycleSkill class as part of Ride2School

Ride2School is Bicycle NSW's initiative to get more students choosing to walk, ride, skate or scooter to and from school safely and responsibly. The percentage of obese and overweight children has increased dramatically within the last 20 years, as many children have developed less active lifestyles. Ride2School aims to improve the health of students by increasing physical activity and changing attitudes to active travel. The healthy lifestyle choices made now will help shape good health in years to come. Choosing to walk or ride is healthy choice for the environment. In our society today it is important that we take every opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint.

We understand that school staff have little time to commit to the program. The program has been created with this in mind and has been designed to have maximum impact with minimal effort. It takes a minute to register online. All registered schools receive the Ride2School newsletter and those wanting to enter Hands Up! data simply conduct the hands up survey in class and enter the information into a specially designed template, then Ride2School does the rest - easy!

HOW CAN MY SCHOOL BECOME INVOLVED IN RIDE2SCHOOL?

Registration in the program is open all year, costs nothing and consumes a very small amount of your time. Ride2School provides you with the tools to motivate your students, break down the barriers and monitor students methods of travel, through the Hands Up! survey system. This allows schools to track their progress on the number of students choosing active travel, compare results with other schools and share good practice. Simple Hands Up! surveys are carried out once a month. Schools who take part in the Hands Up! survey receive some fantastic prizes including bicycles, helmets, lights, cycle computers, t-shirts and much more.

Parents and students can also register their school in the program. The registration process takes a minute to complete. Hands Up! surveys can be carried out once a month at the beginning or end of class, and the entry of survey data takes around 5 minutes. Then we do the rest!

At the most basic level of involvement all registered schools receive a monthly newsletter which highlights everything happening around the state and the country related to Ride2School, including accessing funding for bicycle storage, implementing effective ride education programs at your school and details on any upcoming events.

Ride2School promotional packs are available for bicycle user groups, bike shops, local councils and area health services. If you would like to be sent a promotional pack (including posters, postcards, stickers, wrist bands, lanyards and t shirts) send an e mail to ride2school@bicyclensw.org.au with your details

The Ride2School marketing, coach schools program and events are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
