Seniors Week 2007

The annual NSW Seniors Week event - 'Live Life' - organised by the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC) will be held this year from 11 to 18 March withover 500 events across NSW. The event encourages seniors to lead lives that are full, active andas healthy as possible.

As part of the event, Bicycle NSW have teamed up to promote Seniors Weeks Rides. Local Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) have organisedover 45 rides taking place at various venues across NSW, between Sunday 11 and Sunday 18 March 2007.

The rides have been designed especially for seniors, using safe routes, incorporating parks and off-road cycleways. They will take place at different times, include plenty of rest stops andsome even provide a small snack provided suitable to the time of day. Bike Hire at your own cost is available on some rides. Rides are organised and conducted by experienced ride leaders, however seniors ride at their own risk.

The NSW Seniors Week 'Live Life' cycling programaimsto:
- provide safe and interesting bicycle routes which promote a physically and mentally active, healthy lifestyle
- offer a form of moderate physical exercise with valuable opportunities for social and recreational contacts for seniors
- promote a healthy, safe and convenient mode of transport

So if you or someone you know is a senior and would like to get active while seeing some sights, have some fun and meet new people! ...then have a look at the bike rides on offer. A full program will be available here shortly.

11 to 18 March 2007 - Live Life!

2007 Ride of Silence

Saturday, 19 May, starting at 10 am from Hyde Park.

Sydney cyclists will join a worldwide bicycle rally to raise awareness that cyclists, pedestrians and motorists all share the road.

Reason:

* To honour those who have been injured or killed on our lethal roads

* To raise awareness that we all share the limited transport infrastructure of

this city

* To ask that we all share the road in a considerate and safe manner

* To highlight the urgent need for suitable, safe infrastructure of cyclists

Cycling and walking are safe activities. Riding a bike or walking to work, school, the shops or just for fun also has a health benefit that driving doesn't.

Sadly many cyclists and pedestrians are injured or killed by careless drivers. Although cyclists have a legal right to ride on the road, drivers often aren't aware of this and are sometimes not even aware of the cyclists themselves.

Poorly designed roads also cause many cycling accidents by forcing cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles into dangerous conflict.

Roads that are safer for walking and cycling are safer for driving, too.

Rides of Silence will roll across over 250 cities in North America, Europe, Asia and other northern hemisphere countries on the evening of 16 May.

Since this is an autumn evening in the southern hemisphere, Rides of Silence in Australia's major cities will be held on Saturday morning to increase the safety of participants.

Cyclists will ride in a sedate, silent procession to honour cyclists killed or injured while cycling on public roads.

For more information on the International Ride of Silence check the

website: http://www.bicyclensw.org.au/scripts/www.rideofsilence.org

The Sydney Ride of Silence information is at: http://rideofsilence.wkins.org/ or contact Michael McGrath at: accent@swiftdsl.com.au 02 9949 6683 (home)

We look forward to welcoming you and all your cycling friends on Saturday, May 19th. Please download flyers and posters from http://www.woj.com.au/ and distribute widely.

Gear up Girl

Ahhh… the aromas of freshly brewed coffee and tea, delicious omelettes and frittatas, fresh muffins and crumpets, the sounds of excited women chatting, and the sight of bikes galore near the lakeside on a fresh August morning. I can’t think of a more fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning learning about cycling!

“Gear Up Girl”, is Bicycle NSW’s answer to the growing number of women interested in cycling. The event is a women’s breakfast and cycling clinic – aimed to gather women together in a fun and relaxed environment, and conquer their bike riding fears through motivational speakers, and practical activities such as basic bike maintenance and cycling skills.

It has been found that obstacles women note that stop them participating in cycling are a lack of mechanical knowledge and lack of cycling skills in a group or in traffic. Donna Little, Event Director 2007 City of Sydney Spring Cycle believes “If these fears of cycling are replaced with a confidence about being on a bike, I have no doubt we will see more women take up cycling as a form of fitness, recreation, sport or commuting.”

Due to popular demand from last year, Bicycle NSW is thrilled to be able to take this opportunity to provide the ‘Gear Up Girl’ morning again to encourage women to set goals, and enter the City of Sydney Spring Cycle, on October 21. With route options ranging from 15km to 50km - the event has something for everybody!

“Gear Up Girl” is being held on Saturday 18 August from 8:00am-12:00pm - SOLD OUT.  Please register your interest for November Breakfast at dlittle@bicyclensw.org.au . $15 deposit.
